The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean Sea, on an island called Hispaniola; Haiti occupies the western section.
Constanza is located in the La Vega Province in the center of the country at roughly 3,800 feet above sea level. Approximately 40,000 people live in the urban area of Constanza. There are two Municipal Districts, one being Tireo, and many surrounding villages and towns. These rural areas of Constanza have another 40-50,000 people.
The foundation of the local economy is agriculture; a large percentage of the population earns their living by picking crops. Due to this lifestyle, many people suffer from chronic injuries. Health care is limited, and supplies are extremely limited and expensive. Most people do not have running water and the water they drink is often contaminated. Due to this issue, many children chronically and unnecessarily suffer from water-borne illnesses. Diabetes and hypertension are also common. For these and other reasons, the people of Constanza are in dire need of medical and dental services.
